PREPARING STUDENTS FOR A CAREER IN HEALTH CARE
I grew up in Buna, graduated from BHS and raised my family in Buna. I am a Registered Nurse with over 20 years experience in the health care field. I started teaching the Health Science Technology classes at Buna High School in 2002. Before coming to BHS as teacher and nurse, I worked in the Long Term Care setting.
Health Science Technology courses are designed to give students, with an interest in the Health Care field, a jump start on their career. At Buna High we offer Principles of Health Science, Health Science Theory/Clinical (CNA) and Medical Terminology. State Certification is possible and encouraged in CNA.
Principles of Health Science (PHS) is offered to junior students and is a Prerequisite to HS Theory\Clinical (CNA) class. This course is designed to provide an overview of the therapeutic, diagnostic, health informatics, support services, and biotechnology research and development systems of the health care industry.
Health Science Thery\Clinical (CNA) aka."The Nursing Class" ) is a two period class offered to seniors after successful completion of Prerequisites: Principles of Health Science and Biology. . This class is designed to provide for the development of advanced knowledge and skills related to a wide variety of health careers. Students will employ hands-on experiences for continued knowledge and skill development. The student will acquire knowledge of the aging process, the physical, psycho-social and nutritional needs of the elderly. The student will develop skills to provide quality care for the geriatric client and will then take a state administered test to become a Certified Nurse Aide for the state of Texas.
MEDICAL TERMINOLOGY This course is designed to introduce students to the structure of medical terms, including prefixes, suffixes, word roots, singular and plural forms, and medical abbreviations. The course allows students to achieve comprehension of medical vocabulary appropriate to medical procedures, human anatomy and physiology, and pathophysiology.
